BENEFITS

Custodian Permanent Substitute are committing to 248 days of work per year and will be benefit-eligible on the first day of the month following the start date.

 

LEAVE ACCRUALS

Eligible for five (5) annual leave days to be used as paid time off.

 

DAYS/YEAR  248

HOURS/DAY  Guaranteed a minimum of 8 hours

SCHEDULE  Shifts are 8 hours per day

Morning (6:00 AM -2:30 PM) and Evening (2:30 PM – 11:00 PM) shifts are available.

Shift time may vary based on the assignment.

SUMMARY

The Custodial team is actively looking for two permanent substitute custodians to support the custodial team by covering absences and performing small projects.

The permanent substitute custodians would be assigned to cover daytime and or the evening vacancies depending on the need for that day/week.

 

This position provides custodial services throughout the district's facilities ensuring a safe environment for staff, students, and community members. Custodial substitutes receive one-on-one training with experienced staff and typically work independently receiving minimum supervision and guidance.

Custodial substitute work provides an opportunity to gain skills and experience to apply for a permanent position.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clean the school facilities (i.e., classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, windows, restrooms, sinks, carpets, floors, garbage cans, gym, cafeteria, and other areas as directed) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment to provide adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities, and events (i.e., regular school, community education, special events.)
  • Remove snow (with the use of a shovel and/or snow blower), and de-ice walkways, and steps.
  • Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and good state of preservation.
  • Raise the US flag at the beginning of each school day and lower it at the end of the day.
  • Perform daily operational checks to ensure all exit doors are open and all panic bars are working properly, during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Reports immediately to the principal and head custodian any damage to school property.
  • Assume responsibility for the opening and or closing of the building and secure all doors and windows are secured, and all lights except those left on for safety reasons are turned off.
  • Follows the proper procedures for the storage and disposal of building site waste.
  • Be familiar with the products and equipment used in the care of the building.
  • Be familiar with procedures for building use by outside groups.
  • Maintain building hallways and exits that are free of obstruction while school is in session.
  • Keep buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for a distance of up to six (6) feet; and ability to climb a ladder.
  • Available to work various shifts, including evenings.
  • Ability to follow site-specific instructions and workload details.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of general building maintenance.
  • Flexible in learning new concepts cooperates with others and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  • Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, dependability, high-stress tolerance, reliability, punctuality, and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a working relationship with other employees, management, staff, students, and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

  • Health and physical stamina to stand on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Perform work at various heights, and perform various types of physical labor for an eight (8) hour shift.
  • Lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for a distance of up to six (6) feet.
  • Stand, walk, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, pull, and lift.
  • Stand or walk up to 95 percent of the workday.
  • The position requires frequent squatting, bending, stooping, or twisting at the neck and trunk while performing the essential job functions.
  • Fine motor skills, including the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, and be able to hear or talk to others.
  • Climb and carry ladders.
  • Perform work in adverse weather conditions.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Custodial substitute positions are offered forty hours (40) per week (excluding holiday weeks), employed as on-call positions and paid for hours worked.

Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must complete a fingerprinted background check with the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Employment is contingent upon clearance of the background check.
