POSITION TITLE

Substitute Paraeducator

 

LOCATION

West Valley School District - Various Buildings

 

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Under the direction and supervision of the principal or designee, this position will substitute for regular district paraeducators by providing evidence-based student support in the area(s) identified during the evaluation and annual review of a student's IEP.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age 18.
  • Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  • Possess high moral and ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop positive relationships with staff, students, and families.
  • Demonstrate mature behavior and sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with vulnerable students with a broad range of disabilities.
  • Ability to follow directions, carry out routines, and implement interventions as directed.
  • Work independently and take initiative with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to interact with and instruct students using school technology.
  • Proficiency in basic communication skills and ability to see, hear, and listen to the teacher and students throughout the classroom or school settings in order to supervise and maintain a safe environment.
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position which may include and is not limited to, kneeling, bending, and working or sitting on the floor with students; running after students, based on student needs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide secondary instructional support in the classroom under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Work with individual students or small/large groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skill initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials for classroom use.
  • Alert the regular teacher to any problem concerning an individual student.
  • Assist students with health related needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

                All substitute positions are on an on-call as needed basis.

                Salary:  Substitute rate position will be Step 1 on the negotiated PSE salary schedule.

Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must complete a fingerprinted background check with the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Employment is contingent upon clearance of the background check.
