West Valley School District is seeking flexible individuals to join our dynamic team as a bus driver. We offer paid CDL training for qualified drivers. Applicants must be 21 year old, with a minimum 5 years of driving experience, and an ability to obtain or maintain CDL license Class B with Passenger & School Bus Type I endorsements required. Ability to obatain or maintain DOT physical required.

DAYS/YEAR  190 (10 months)

 

HOURS/DAY  Guaranteed a minimum of 4 hours daily or 20 hours per week. Willingness to drive for weekend and evening athletic activities/trip would result in additional hours.

 

SCHEDULE  Shift time may vary based route and assignment

SALARY  Level 3 Transportation - M&O Salary Schedule

Placement is dependent on verified experience.

Pay is annualized over 12 months

Paid training is provided to obtain Bus Driver CDL.

SUMMARY

The relief school bus driver will be guaranteed a minimum of 4 hours per day or 20 hours per week. Additional hours are available based on interest and schedule availability. The relief driver is primarily responsible for providing relief when the regularly assigned driver is not able to complete their route due to an absence from work or unforeseen circumstances.  Relief drivers will also be assigned to extracurricular trips that route drivers are unable to complete due to the timing of their route and start time for the trip.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive a school bus on scheduled routes or extra-curricular trips in support of district-approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries.
  • Operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State (minimum) School Bus Specifications. Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies promulgated by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus and related equipment (pre and post-trip inspections).
  • Oversee the loading and unloading of students at assigned stops, releasing students to authorized individual; assure that safety belts are fastened if applicable.
  • Report all accidents to the office before moving vehicle from scene, unless directed otherwise by a law enforcement official.
  • Successfully complete school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and complete training programs and courses as offered by West Valley School District Transportation Department.
  • Operate and maintain all school bus equipment and accessories including but not limited to, fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, first aid kits.
  • Monitor students with special health problems while on the bus; receive written or oral instructions, be aware of and alert to any signs of difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures, administering first aid/CPR and calling for emergency assistance.
  • Communicate bus rules and safety and behavior requirements to passengers; address improper behavior immediately while using appropriate interpersonal communication skills; document and report severe disciplinary cases.
  • Communicate with student’s parent/guardian and/or school staff to solve inappropriate or unsafe behavior immediately while using appropriate interpersonal communication skills.
  • Complete forms, records and reports as required by the State or local district policies.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the general public.
  • Maintain the environmental conditions in the bus to a high standard of health and safety.
  • Assure maintenance of bus in safe and clean operating condition; report needed mechanical repairs, sweep interior of the bus, pick up and empty garbage, wash windows and keep the driver’s area free of loose/not secured items.
  • Have knowledge of and follow federal, state, local and district rules and regulations concerning the operation of a school bus; comply with all traffic laws.
  • Understand and follow procedures, policies and requirements of the Transportation Department for West Valley School District.
  • Assist in any special projects/additional duties assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age of 21 years old.
  • Possess valid state driver’s license including a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements.
  • Possess current State of Washington School Bus Driver’s Authorization.
  • Possess valid Medical Examiners Certificate certifying medical ability to drive a school bus.
  • Pass pre-employment drug test; undergo random drug testing periodically.
  • Maintain current First Aid/CPR card.
  • Possess WSP Fingerprint clearance.
  • Have sufficient command of the English language to communicate with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their related activities.
  • Possess sufficient strength and agility to move about in an overturned bus as required, providing assistance to students in evacuating the bus.
  • Maintain cooperative relations with other employees, management, and the public.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires driving a school bus in all kinds of weather and under many different traffic conditions;  required to lift, move and carry equipment; potentially exposed to a variety of ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds; exposed to diesel fumes when unloading or loading students; required to work outdoors in inclement weather; exposed to student and bus noise levels; required to crouch, bend, push, pull and work in other non-routine positions; required to attend to students’ personal hygiene; may be required to lift up to 50 pounds.

 

This position requires that employees be available to transport students out of town in the afternoon/evening and at time until late at night.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and work year are determined by the negotiated agreement and the needs of the District.

 

Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must complete a fingerprinted background check with the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Employment is contingent upon clearance of the background check.

RETIREMENT - All regular, non-substitute employees are enrolled in a state retirement plan through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS).

 

SICK LEAVE - All regular, non-substitute employees receive 12 sick leave days (prorated based on FTE) and paid time off. Substitute employees receive sick leave per RCW 49.46.210.

 

PAID TIME OFF - All regular, non-substitute employees receive paid time off, including annual and/or vacation leave. Paid time off varies by position and work year. Refer to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement or salary schedule for details.
